‘The girl in white kimono’

‘The road to perfection’

The third episode in ‘Het geheim van de Meester’ the expert team reconstructs
‘The girl in white kimono’ by using the original Breitner camera!

The girl in white kimono is an painting from the famous series of kimono girls by George Hendrik Breitner. As a preliminary study for his paintings, he used photos of his muze ‘Geesje Kwak’ in kimono. She dies from tuberculosis after moving to South Africa at age 22.

To get close as possible to Breitner’s manufacturing process, I collaborate together with Jasper Krabbé and William Rutten.

We took photo’s with Breitner’s original box camera. An authentic and wonderful museum object with his paint all over. I made handmade glass negatives and it turns out to be a fasinating process on set and in the darkroom.

Watch the art program I was part of together with Jasper Krabbé, Charlotte Caspers, Michel van de Laar, Prof. Dr. Joris Dik, Berd Visscher, William Rutten and muze Laura van Bussel.
